Welcome to the Crowning Glory

Knutsford Heritage Centre is delighted to be staging the special Knutsford's Crowning Glory exhibition celebrating the town's 150th May Day.

The exhibition features crowns, gowns, memorabilia and memories from May Queens down the years.

Visitors will be able to trace the history of May Day, learn about its customs, and watch video screenings of May Day processions.

The exhibition opens on Saturday 29 March and runs until Sunday 29 June. Entry is free but donations are very welcome.

The centre has chosen the photograph (top right) of Doris Pemberton, the 50th May Queen who was crowned in 1914, to represent the exhibition. This is particularly poignant as we commemorate the start of the First World War in 2014. Our thanks to the family for allowing us to use the image.

Join our 'Turn Up & Go' Walking Tours - every Friday at 2pm

NO NEED TO BOOK - May 2nd to October 31st

Every Friday at 2pm, from the beginning of May to the end of October, just turn up at the shop, pay £5 and go on our newest walk ‘Tales, Trails and Tea Shops’ (max. 12 people: larger groups need to book, please). Take a guided walk around Knutsford and explore some of its more hidden and/or unusual attractions on a route which leads you gently around the town from Tatton Park gates in the north to the Parish Church in the south.

Walks take about an hour and follow a town centre route which is, more or less, flat (just one steepish, short hill which we descend). Wear appropriate footwear and carry a waterproof and/or umbrella (this is the UK, after all). We are very flexible in trying to accommodate special needs and requirements. Finally, an added bonus on any walk is that not only do our trained guides ‘know their stuff’’ but they know all the best coffee shops and lunch/tea venues as well. Book or request more information via phone (01565 650506) or this website.

Thank you sponsors!

Knutsford Heritage Centre would like to thank everyone who made it possible for us to stage the Crowning Glory exhibition.

Special thanks goes to Knutsford Town Council for its generous donation, exhibition sponsors Clare & Illingworth, Mannings the Chemist, Tatton Estates, those who provided help in kind - Sainsbury’s, Knutsford Bloom, Flora Home Furnishings - and photographers Fred McDowell, Derek Schofield, and Jonathan Farber who supplied photos for the exhibition.

We are also very grateful for the support of the Knutsford Guardian who printed our leaflets and posters free of charge, and Stephen Bridgehouse of Juno Photographic who has taken photos and videos to help promote the exhibition.

Finally we would like to thank Angela and Bob of the Don Giovanni restaurant for providing such lovely food and wine which added the Crowning touch to the event.
