The Green Man resides in our lower courtyard, in recognition of Jack-in-the-Green, who can be seen annually at the front of the Knutsford Royal May Day procession.
The sculpture is made of bronze and oak and stands 3 metres tall. It is greatly admired and photographed by visitors to Knutsford, but sadly the weather has taken its toll and one of his feet is rotting away. The repair to the Green Man’s foot will cost several hundred pounds. We are hoping to raise this money through donations, sponsorship and a fundraising competition.

THE ORAL HISTORY OF KNUTSFORD
A major new project by the Knutsford Heritage Centre
Oral history is the recording of people’s memories, experiences and opinions.
It is:
A living history of everyone’s unique life experiences
An opportunity for those people who have been ‘hidden from history’ to have their voice heard
A rare chance to talk about and record history face-to-face
A source of new insights and perspectives that may challenge our view of the past
The Knutsford Heritage Centre believes that oral history is of great social importance and plans to create a permanent archive of personal recollections relating to the town’s past.
Knutsford was featured on a recent BBC2 Great Rail Journey programme featuring Michael Portillo in January 2016. Knutsford Heritage Centre worked with Boundless TV on the research for this programme during 2015.
Knutsford Heritage Centre opened in 1989 and is run entirely by Volunteers. It collects , displays and interprets the history of Knutsford for the benefit of both local people and visitors.
